Your Psychology
What makes you, You?
You are unique as an individual, out of the 6.5billion Human Inhabitants of Planet Earth, no-one else is like you, you literally are one of kind, and that makes you very special indeed.
You are the sum of an equation of your physical appearance and your behaviours (your psychology), your physical appearance being fairly easy to define, your psychology is much more complex in structure and is the result of many different influences.
Psychology is the study of behaviour and to understand behaviours we need to understand the building blocks that shape our behaviour, why we do the things we do in any given situation.
Our brains are continually processing information, our senses deliver thousands of packets of information every second, but our minds can only process a very small number at anyone time and so much of the information that our brains are processing does not make it into our concious thought.
So, how do we sub-conciously decide which pieces of information whould we be aware of and which pieces remain outside of our awareness?
Our brains use Filters to separate the information stream and the filters that you have are defined by your attitudes, your beleifs and values, your memories and your language, and these unique characterists of you form your personality.
Filters are very useful, they help your sub-concious to decypher which packets of information are relevant to you at anyone time, this makes your concious mind very efficient, because remember its capacity is only very small in relation to the amount of information your brain deals with every second.
So, how do your filters work? Practitioners agree that filters work by Deleting, Distorting and Generalising the information that is being processed by the brain.
Deleting
In order to process the information that our individual personality filters, information is deleted. The downside to deletion is that information can be missed. Do you ever look around for your keys, and don’t see them despite their being right in front of you? This happens to some people more than others, but most of us will have experienced it, this is deletion.
Distortion
Our filters can distort information, and this is often based on our expectations of a situation. Sometimes when we expect something we only see those aspects that support our expectations, reinforcing our opioions. This often happens when we have already formed an opinion about someone or something, and when a new situation occurs we can distort what is actually happening, to fit what we expect to happen.
Generalisation
When we generalise we see a summary of an event, this enables us to grasp more information but can also mean that we miss details. We often generalise when we are in a hurry or we are not really paying attention to what is going on.
So we can see how our personailty (made up of our attitudes and beleifs etc) can affect the way that we process information and as a result our personality affects our awareness of a situation. Because of this, our personailty creates our own reality, and hence our behaviour.
So, our personality not only descibes our psychology, but it also shapes our reality, it is indeed a very powerful aspect of human beings.
But what sort of Personality are You and what are the differences between personality?
